Uni Blog Week 07

Last updated: 18 minutes ago

Intro

The beginning of week 07. There is going to be a lot of study and practice for midterms and a few assignments that I need to finish up from last week. Here we go!

Project Management (Monday Morning)

Lecture

We didn't have a live lesson today, the professor had an engagement he couldn't break. But he provided a prerecorded lesson for midterm review.

Assignments

No assignments this week. Just a review for the midterm and continuing to work on the group project. The group project is coming along nicely. Other groupies are getting information into the report and I am getting information onto the website. Also getting it formatted better and some custom visual content.

We have requested and received an extension on our project from the 26th to the 30th. Just with everyone having midterms right now, we thought that would be best to try and get an extension. I would still like to hand in on time but it's been challenging. This is the first time in my uni career that I have requested an extension.

Operating Systems (Monday Afternoon)

Lecture

We are discussing CPU scheduling today. I already covered the content as he released the slides last week. He also covered the upcoming midterm.

Assignments

Just the one that I have already finished.
Got all of our assignments marked! That made me happy! So far in assignments, my group and I are sitting at 95.55% Which is awesome!

Data Communications (Tuesday Afternoon)

Lecture

Covered the upcoming midterm and expectations. Then a quiz. Lectures for hours on the Mac layer.

Assignments

First thing is first this week, I need to finish the assignment 5 that was assigned last week. Got a couple of hamming questions left plus the group efforts part. Got this done. It's so weird doing polynomial division by converting everything to binary first. I have no idea if this will ever be useful again, but it really doesn't seem like it.

Project

Finally starting to think about and hammer out the details of this project and report. What I am thinking I'll do is create two VM's. One will send controlled data to the second. The second VM will have a packet filtering app in user space and one in eBPF kernel space. I will benchmark the performance difference of both apps. This should get me some OS and C programming and a good portfolio project for when I start applying to Linux OS positions, I'm targeting Ubuntu and Redhat after I get done here.

Extreme Programming (Thursday Afternoon)

Lecture

Midterm this week, no lecture. That midterm was ROUGH. The content was full of weird questions. But the participants were really bad. so many people got hung up on not being able to install VS Code extensions. No extensions were required to code the answers. And then people couldn't submit the code and the professor kept having to reopen the test for submission. At one point I heard the professor mumble something like, "This is ridiculous, you all are 4th years students."

Shennanigans aside, I think I got a 60-80. Some of the code wasn't great. Like I forgot how to sort a dict. And I started getting bitchy and may have let a little of that through on the written answers part. We will see though.

AND THEN I also got a parking ticket for the spot that I paid for. So now I have to fight that tomorrow once their office reopens. Yay!
There was no fight, I got on chat support and uploaded my receipt and they reversed the ticket. Im thrilled.

Assignments

Likewise, no assignments.

Supposed to be getting a dataset for our group project but still have not seen that come across the table so we can not get started on it. We chose to use book data.

Personal Things

Reading The Vampyre, Sleepy Hollow, and What Eats the Dead this week. No programming this week, too much going on for Uni. A little gaming though; Path Of Exile and Final Fantasy Resonance.
I have my paternal grandmother's memorial this weekend. I am sort of looking forward to that, I have really seen that much of that side of the family in quite a while. I was worried that my dad would be there, but my Aunt assured me that he wouldn't. I am mad at him; he has turned his back on his family and ignored us for decades. He has missed almost all of adulthood milestones and all of his granddaughter's life.

Conclusion

So yeah this week has been hard and this week doesn't look any better. I cancelled going to the the Google Dev fest tomorrow because I need to study for these exams and get this PM project done. Makes me sad because I was really looking forward to it. I hope it's an annual conference, and that I can get to it next year. :)
