Uni Blog Week 09

Last updated: 14 minutes ago

Intro

One thing I have noticed about this blog (that I may need to change), is that I work on all week long. This means that some of it may seem disjointed or sudden because instead of it being a smooth retrospect of the entire week in one sitting. I am not sure if I should change the process to being retrospective on a friday or not. I feel like that would be too much work and I would stop doing it. Maybe I should just spend a little extra time on friday before posting it to smoothing it out and making it appear as an intentional retrospective. I'll think on it through out this upcoming week.

Project Management (Monday Morning)

Lecture

No Lecture. Midterm exam. This is already graded! Dayum!

Assignments

No assignments due to midterm.

Project is moving forward though. We got that extension to the 30th and my groupmates and I are all very relieved.

Operating Systems (Monday Afternoon)

Lecture

No lecture. Midterm Exam.

Assignments

No new assignments due to midterm. Did finish and submit last weeks though.

Data Communications (Tuesday Afternoon)

Lecture

No Lecture. Midterm Exam. This fucking clown called me out in class, about half way through the midterm for leaving early because of my parental obligations. I was so angry; I would not be surprised if i failed the second half of the midterm. I hate this guy so much. I hope that he gets laid off in the whole "laying off all the teachers because international student enrollment is down."

Assignments

Another assignment.

Project

Now that midterms are over, I am glad to get back to this.

Extreme Programming (Thursday Afternoon)

Lecture

I'm pretty sure that I am going to stop attending these classes; the professor wastes so much of our time. I can easily learn everything from each lecture and a lot more from the comfort of my own home. Today she arrived on time but didn't start lecturing for 20 minutes. And then at the end of her lecture she made us sit around for half hour before "releasing" us. She only really lectured for about half hour of a 3 hour course. Like screw this, I am done. I'll still do my work and learn the content but I am going to save my time, gas, parking money, and patience going forward.

Assignments

No Assignments

Project

The professor has released the datasets for the projects..... smh. She put all the links into a word doc and didnt label any of them. We had to figure out which link was ours by clicking on all of them. I probably have ALL the viruses now. The link that is intended for our group, isn't a dataset link; it's just the homepage of Project Gutenberg. And they dont seem to have any publicly accessible dataset to book ratings. After some googling, I found a more appropriate dataset based on GoodReads on OpenBigData with book ratings. Book ratings are required by project instructions. We may request to use that instead, but we will wait till the next class and hope that she goes over more information about the datasets.

Group mate and I found some data. She has absolutely blasted her half of the assignment. So, in the next few days I am going to have to do the same. We both want to get it done because we have larger more important projects to work on.

Personal Things

Been playing Final Fantasy Resonance Demo a bit this week. I don't care for all the all the nostalgic drip in it, the story line is mid, and then menu isn't great. But the mechanics are pretty damn good and have kept me hooked into the game. They are using Visions which you can equip to your characters to get different skill sets, and as the visions level they learn more skills that the party can equip wethere they have the vision ueqipped or not. It's a pretty cool concept that offers the player a lot of build out options. I just wish they had gone with a new idea instead of just feeding us another nostalgia piece, but I am also really sick and tired of all the nostalgia, remakes, reboots, sequels, etc. There must still be new ideas out there but they keep pandering to the 90's kids (I am one as well).

Also been playing a MUD game called Aardwolf; I have never played a mud before. A friend turned me onto it and after a slow start, I am really getting into it. It's a text based mmo rpg that runs on telnet. Apparently the one I am playing has been around for 29+ years! That alone is pretty cool. I am still in the learning zone and havent formed a really good opinion yet but I'll let you all know.

Been rereading "What Moves the Dead" and reading "The Wolf and His King". Apparently What Moves the Dead is based on an old Edgar Allen Poe story "The Fall of the House of Usher". Naturally I need to read that now. Also, "The Wolf and his King" is based on a tale from the 12th century, "Bisclavret". I have read the tale and it is very good, and I am very excited for this retelling. I'm about an hour in and its really good so far. This story is in public domain of, so here is a Download Link. I clicked the link myself and it downloaded the PDF, but of couse you should be wary of clicking on links.

Now that midterms are over, I am getting back to personal programming. I have a couple of ideas that I really want to start. One is a grimdark fantasy game, which is going to lead to some creative writing, another is an OS process monitor for my portfolio. But first I have to finish my platformer demo game and the two school programming projects.

I may also be messing around with a new config for my NixOS laptop that I may do a write up for because it's pretty interesting. As a little teaser, I am messing around with a dual OS that does not rely on two OS's being installed.

OH! I got two new Wandering Inn books this week too. I am soexcited to read those. They will probably be part of November along with the World of the White Rat. November is going to be a big month for reading!

Conclusion

All in all... this week was busy and kind of sucked. Happy Halloween you all. Hkave fun out there and be safe!
